How can you help increase awareness for coastal flooding and erosion impacts?
In Maria Mitchell Association’s Science Speaker Series, Julia Knisel taught us just how we can help. Here are some important points from her discussion:
- Every nor’easter that brings extremely high tides raises awareness of coastal flooding and erosion thanks to the documentation of these impacts
- The documentation of storms and their impact helps communities in planning and managing efforts that can minimize the damages
- Ten years ago, the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (CZM) launched MyCoast, a portal to collect and analyze photos and data that relate to coastal hazards and impacts
So, what can you do to help?
Download the MyCoast APP (Apple or Google) on your phone or visit their website, to submit and review reports. Knisel explained that by doing this, you can increase awareness of local impacts, inform response and recovery efforts, and influence best practices, policies, regulations, and long-term priorities.
